Samuel applied for a Texas Confederate pension at 78, 44 years after his unit surrendered, and filled out the form himself, so his handwriting and signature are throughout. He gave his former occupation as farmer and valued all his property at $295. The pension was approved, though not at the full rate.
Two men who had served under him, Simeon Mathews and Andrew Tyler Polk, both of San Augustine, attested to the application. After Samuel’s death in 1911 his widow, Mary, received a widow’s pension until her own death in 1925.
